Seeking current info for labour day weekend lakes entrance

Post by Sebb » Tue Feb 25, 2020 6:25 am

Hi all,

I'm heading to lakes entrance on the labour day long weekend, staying in eastern beach, camping with friends and their kids (10yo and 12yo). Will bring my kayak too.
I know there are members here who are locals to Gippsland.
Just wondering what to expect at the moment so I know what to bring and plan the trip. Will be doing mostly landbased fishing and crabbing. Maybe kayak fishing as mostly the kids be playing with it.
Thanks in advance. Any info such as what's biting, what to look for, where to, etc etc. Much appreciated.

Thanks. Close to the mouth?
Trolling/casting 120mm metal/hardbodies?
I'm keen to get my first king for sure.

footbridge is best, soft plastics and squid.
Plenty of salmon around on the beach, just have to be patient and keep at it till they turn up.
Chance of a gummy beach fishing.
KGW have gone quiet.
I had 10 big flatties today on the east side of the Red Bluff in close, back of the break. If it was calm you could kayak out from the bluff. I know a few that do.
There's nothing . . . absolutely nothing . . . half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.

Thanks.

Soft plastic and squid bait for kingfish? That I'll try.
How big are the kingfish? Should I use my 8kg rod with 20lb line or 12kg rod with 40lb line?
Mind you, I'll be on a yak.

Also, it's gonna be a full moon. Not so good for prawning. But I'm guessing crabbing wont be affected?

Kingfish are up to 80cm with a few undersize. I would be going for the 40lb line, they go hard and you need to keep them away from the bridge .
Prawns are not good this year even the commercial offshore boats are only getting a few. Usual story when we have a drought during spring and summer.
Plenty of crabs around. The best spot is up towards the Barrier landing, quite a paddle in a Kayak.

Fair paddle to barrier landing. Might take water taxi to get there and have a bit of a picnic.
What about kalimna jetty, any good for Crabbing?
Since not all my friends got kayak.

Kalimna jetty is not great for crabs.
If you are getting a water taxi, go across the the eastern side of the entrance and cast metals for salmon. Get him to drop you off on the beach next to the flagstaff jetty and walk down along the rocks to the entrance. You could also try crabbing in the lake next to the rocks.
Still kingfish being caught around the footbridge and jetties.

Got the two rods rigged.
12kg rod with snelled 7/0 KL hook, 40 lb braid and 50lb fluorocarbon leader, plan to use squid strip.
8kg rod with 20lb braid 20lb fluorocarbon leader and slug-go for the smaller kingfish.
Hopefully I'll get my first kingfish.
I'm assuming tide change and sunrise/sunset is best like everything else.
