1988 Whitley Cherokee 530 or 1972 Savage Atlantic 5.4m
Hey guys, looking at getting a boat roughly about 10k-15k. There is a couple I’m looking at in that range which are the Whitley Cherokee 5.3m with reco engine 135 V6 mercury black maxx and 4hrs done, from a dealership it’s dropped $5,500 after sitting 4months, trailers is decent condition. The other is 1972 Savage Atlantic 5.4m has 151 hrs 130 V4 Yamaha saltwater series, always garaged, floor and transom replaced, one owner, heads cleaned, full service, 2k spent on the engine recently, trailer is in good condition.
Which one would be more suited to westernport/PPB?
I’m not to worried about maintenance down the track as I’ve worked at dunbier trailers, fibreglass repairs and a qualified mechanic so shouldn’t have much issue saving a few bucks with the experience.
Anything else I should be looking at around that price range?
Also how many hours on a motor is too much?
Cheers for your time.

Whitley would be by far the better boat.
But both are old and not worth much, whitley would be worth around 8k pending electronics.

The electronics are pretty good on it, being from a dealer too they’d have to be I’d say. Looking at going with that due to 6 seats and couple other extras like a half decent fish finder.

Don't make that mistake dealer only wants to make money. If the boat didn't have electronics dealer with fit the cheapest crap they could.

By looks of it, it’s been fixed up used once and then sold to dealer, maybe a trade in or the wife’s cracked it about money spent. Has a stereo with speakers fitted and 27mhz marine radio, wasn’t really used as a fishing boat more fresh water skiing. When go back I’ll take a really good look over the electronics, been sitting at dealership 4-5 months now.

Get a Pre - purchase inspection don’t trust it
just because its from a dealer.
Deep V hulls more suited to PPB/ WP >Haines Hunter ,Haines Signature,Seafarer, Caribbean etc.

The savage has a deep V hull and said it’s good in rough water. Will be getting the pre purchase inspection.

Whittey has a deep V and will be a much better handling boat. The Savage Atlantic has a pretty shallow V, I have seen the add and the Savage is worth 5k max.

It’s saying it’s a moderate v hull instead of the deep for the Whitley and Savage Atlantic has the deep v hull. 5k really? Others I’ve seen in other states are about the same price. I’ve already spoken about price and will be under what is posted on the ad anyway.

Re: 1988 Whitley Cherokee 530 or 1972 Savage Atlantic 5.4m
The savage has a shallow V at around 15 deg.
The whittle has 19 deg, commonly a boat with 20 deg plus is considered deep V. The whittley is a much better hull design and 19 deg V is certainly a big improvement over the savage.
Yes 5k max for the savage, the motor has some value the hull and trailer are only worth scrap.
Market is dead atm we recently sold our 5.2m Haines Hunter. Was a much better boat than those which you are looking at. Boat and motor were perfectly setup perfect balance etc and it was a brilliant performer. The trailer and motor had both been replaced much newer than what you are looking at and after many months on the market we eventually sold it for 11k.
Many dreamers asking crazy $$$ and have boats up for sale for years at a price they never get.
