Fishing Thompson River

Post by Scanner88 » Thu Apr 27, 2023 10:28 pm

Hi all, been fishing for natives (Cod. etc) around the Yarra for the past few months. Thinking of a trip to somewhere Ive never been, do a little exploring and catch something different.
I'm based in the Bayswater area and have done the Goulburn a few times.
I've been looking at maps and the Thompson river around Rawson specifically, to throw some lures and chase some trout. Is it a good place to fish or am I wasting my time with a 2hr one way trip.

Also any other suggestions are most welcome.

Cheers!!

Welcome to the forum.
I've fished Thompson river for bass closer to Traralgon. Fisheries stocks bass there.
Upstream of Rawson definitely more trout water. There's supposed to be trout everywhere around Baw Baw, and they're natural recruitment.
So, I'd say it's worth going.

First stop I ever make when hitting up a new area is this section of the VFA website. It helps form a picture of a catchment and any sub-branch creeks, what species each particular area usually holds and the habitat
