NEW (TO ME) TINNY

Post by Paulanderson » Tue Jan 17, 2023 9:04 am

Hi All

Well after leaving Africa and moving to Lakes Entrance to basically retire the next step was to get a suitable tinny to fish the lakes and just outside on good days. My wish list included the following requirements:

About 4.2 m
Forward steering and controls
Padded seats
Good canopy
Compass
Lighting
Opening windscreen
At least some safety equipment
Underfloor fuel tank
Adequate rod holders
Bilge pump
At least a basic gps/sounder
Bait board
Around 40 HP oil injected outboard with electric start and power tilt and trim (hopefully a recent compression test)
Solid trailer with minimal rust
Boat and trailer registered
Sound hull with no significant damage or repairs

My maximum budget was $10,000 and hopefully a bit less!

After many phone calls, inspecting several boats and avoiding some scammers, I settled on an Ally Craft Navajo 4.25 m tinny that ticked all the boxes. It is actually a little overpowered with a 50 HP Yammy. Having owned several larger boats over the years it is very easy to see if a boat has been looked after and this one had clearly had a good life and required very little tidying up. Price was negotiated down to $7,500 plus what it cost to collect it at Mystery Bay near Narooma in NSW. All I have had to buy so far is a scaling bag, some ropes and a set of flares. Next step is to get a Victorian Boat License and then get out fishing!

I hope the above list is useful for new prospective boat buyers.

Paul
