FYI here is a list of what Nomad recommend for customers to take on their charters. (may be bias toward partner brands)

GT popping outfit with a 7’8-8ft GT popping rod matched with a heavy GT spinning reel with 100lb Pandora Braid or Nomad Hollow Core Braid. Suitable rods would be a Wilson Venom PE8-10, Ripple Fisher GT79R, 78 flex or Yamaga Blue Reef 78/8

GT stickbat outfit with a 7’10″-8’2″ stickbait rod matched with a similar GT spinning reel with 100lb Pandora Braid or Nomad Hollow Core Braid. Rod suitable would be Ripple fisher Ultimo 79MH, Ultimo 79H or GT79R

A lighter Spin outfit with 65lb braid matched with an 8000 or 10000 size reel, the rod should be a PE5-6 rated spin rod between 7-7’6″. This outfit is used on the shallow reef flats to give you a better chance at landing the bigger fish that tend to bust us off on the 40lb outfit, and also to cast the mid range stickbaits that work well in these areas.

A lighter spinning rod with a 5000 size reel, 40lb braid, matched to a 7-7’6″ casting rod. Rods we use for this job are ether a Yamaga Blue Sniper 70/4 or a 75/4.

Another lighter 20lb spin rod with a 7ft casting rod is also sometimes useful for night fishing from the mothership for a bit of sport.

Our light 40lb spin rod can be used for Micro jigging, but we recommend to bring your own PE 2 micro jig rod in either spin or overhead with thin diameter 30lb braid such as Nomad Design Pandora Braid in 30lb. The range of Gomoku jig rods are ideal for this and are well priced.

They don’t go into too much detail of reels and brands, but the rod sizes and type seem similar to what most have suggested here

Just a question, in a perfect world I’d rather not buy both a heavy popper AND a heavy stickbait rod, would I get away with an all-rounder for this trip, or would it be better off just going the popper option and make-do with it when throwing around stickies as well?

When I read the list and before I read this bit, I was going to advise you not to get stressed about this. Deadset, something like the Assasin I described will do you fine. I'm not sure about the Wilson, but the ripplefishers are near enough to $1000 a piece.

You don't need a specialised popping rod to work a popper, and you don't need a specialised sticky rod to swim a stickbait. Don't get me wrong, they're really, really nice, but for a single trip it's not worth the capital. Anything PE8-10 that casts heavy (up to 180ish) and is about 8 foot long will do you. Spend a bit more for one that won't break.

Would something like this suffice for a popper/stickbait hybrid GT combo, or need heavier for the really big fish? Also i know its not an XG stella, but they'd probably swap the HG for an XG if asked?

A rod that you could look at for the Jigging come trolling would be the Jigstar Phantom. It is 5'7" and comes in both Spin and Overhead configurations so you can match your preferable style of reel.

They don't make an 18000xg stella, you would have to ask for a 14. The combo is fine. I broke my PE10 Shimano World Series on that GT I linked earlier but that might be a co incidence.

I don't know if the value is as good as it first appears, If you can get a salty / stella for 1100-1200 somewhere you can buy a premium rod for about the same difference.

Aww that’s a bummer about the 18000 and no xg

Is there much spec differential between and 18hg and a 14xg?

Will the 14 suffice in most cases for GT’s? I think that size is going to be more universal for species down here (sharks and bft) and also likely easier to work with casting etc

Just my 2 cents, butf you choose to go down the 14kxg path as well, you also have the option of picking up aftermarket spools.

To my knowledge SOM and Maxel make a 16000 size spool that fit the 14k reel, so you have the xg as well as a bit more line capacity to put on probably thicker line.

Also, you can swap between both spools pretty easily depending on what you're chasing, and have a spare spool to bring along "just in case".

It would pair up perfectly.
I have seen quite a few stores match that rod with the Talica
Just be aware that the Overhead version has an Acid / Spiral wrap design and it looks unusual when you see it, but once you use it you'll see why it's so good!
