Maribyrnong River, 09/01/21
I went down to the Maribyrnong River this morning and fished through the high tide from 9:30am to 12:30pm before heading to the in-laws' place to mow their lawns. Since Anaconda had none of my favourite baits in stock (no prawns, pipis or earthworms) I settled for salted pilchards in the hope of landing something decent. To my surprise I landed a nice 30cm bream about half an hour into my session. As it's been a few years since I last caught a legal-sized bream I decided to keep it, although I was made to question my decision when a man walking his dog started talking to me about the levels of mercury present in the river and how he wouldn't personally eat anything from it The going was very slow and unfortunately I couldn't tempt anything else to bite so I cleaned up the bank a bit before calling it a day. I scaled and gutted the fish at the in-laws' and then shallow fried it. Here's hoping I haven't ingested a debilitating dose of mercury....

A bit murkier than the past two outings on the nong, not as many baitfish swimming around either. Probably still settling from all the rain at the start of the week.

Ok. Thanks.
Was thinking of going there today. I guess I'll wait for another couple days.

Good report, Charles
When you buy worms at Anaconda, check them before leaving the store. Hoppers store does not date the packets & I have had to return an empty (well the worms are liquefied, I think) container.
Not happy getting to the fishing spot & have no bait.

Mate I haven't been satisfied with the quality of worms from a number of stores recently. The last container I bought contained good-sized ones but they were limp as anything and when I dumped the ones I didn't use in my worm farm I found them dead on top of the newspaper the next day. Absolute garbage, unfortunately I've used all the big ones in my farm and need to wait for the tackers to grow a bit.Texas wrote: ↑Mon Jan 11, 2021 12:08 pmGood report, Charles

Mercury is an issue if you are consuming fish with higher levels on the reg. If you are eating the odd fish , I dont think it will be an issue .
Just try and not eat a 40 yr old bream for dinner every night and you should be good.

There is always more to learn , fish to catch , places to see and friends to make.
