Hi all,
Went for a trip to Apollo Bay last week and went fishing off the pier from about 8pm to midnight on the 14th and 15t and for a couple of hours in the late afternoon of the 17th. I managed to get a few tommy rough and a nice wrasse at the end of the pier. I think I got another wrasse but the seal grabbed it before I could properly ID it. Let me reiterate what I read from earlier posts saying that there is nothing to catch at the end of the pier when that seal is around! - The second wrasse was caught under the pier during the day when the seal wasn't around and otherwise all I could manage was little tommy rough schooling under the light at the end of the pier.
On the evening of the 14th I tried fishing closer in to where the boats dock and managed a pinkie and a couple of eels. The eels were much thinner than the freshwater ones and yellow - could anyone advise me if these are sand eels and if the make good bait? All were returned alive.
Everyone fishing there was very helpful and friendly. It was great to fish away from the bay and it has given me an appetite for driving a little extra for a nicer spot.
Cheers,
Leo

Yeah it's a wrasse. And yes, can be hard to catch fish with a seal around.

Good report mate, those seals can be very frustrating. The eels you caught may have been short head worm eels, I caught one a little while ago and was confused until I did a bit of research.

Cheers both. Yep, they were definitely short headed worm eels. Thanks very much Irishfisheman!
