St Leonards Calamari 13/11/2020

Post by Andrews » Sat Nov 14, 2020 9:16 am

Hey Everyone,
I wanted to pump out this report early weekend to give all your boaters and land-based guys the best chance hooking up to some calamari.
Today is beaut weather for St Leonards and there are a few nice days this week.

Fished Friday 1:30PM-3:00PM, overcast day with a gusty westerly, super clean water with a deep green colour on the run out tide.
West winds have made the water clean and todays continued west expect amazing squidding when the clouds turn partly cloudy early afternoon, full sun late afternoon.

Since the water was a deep green and overcast, I went with an olive/rainbow foil jig for the dark silhouette. Black jigs would work well too.

Squid #1 & 2
These squid were aggressive, no hesitation attacking the jig on the first drop. A high action, slow drop technique worked best, plenty of movement with multiple sinks to get that attention. Hooked into two, friend caught the third before it cooled down.

Squid #3
Casting out using that westerly to drift the jig across the weed had another squid grab from the underside, drop then hook up. Just working three hops, sink, three hops, sink and barely even winding in keeping that jig moving sideways as opposed to towards the pier.

Squid #4
Smashed the jig close to the pier, since they were aggressive I was keeping the jig deep right up to the pier then stopping and letting it sink. Caught a few this way.

Squid #5
Bigger squid of the day grabbed this jig and started pulling like buggery. Had him hooked on the single candle, net came in handy lifting him.

Squid #6, 7 & 8
Casting into the faster current and doing a few actions on the edge of the weed and sinking deep into the sand caught these nice squid. They were waiting ready to ambush and that they did. Gave away two to one of the local ladies as the wind was picking up.

Ripper day chasing the calamari, heading out against today 1:30-3PM and expecting similar conditions. Clear water, deep green on an overcast, potentially cloudy day. I'll be sticking with the brown jig, maybe swapping to white depending on the sun.

Great report & catch, andrews
I wouldn't be surprised if, you have to wait until Monday for a fish.
Traffic jams heading out of Melbourne last night.
Hope I'm wrong

Thanks Texas!
I'm pretty lucky living only five minutes away from St Leonards, but you're right about having to wait for a fish! I did the same 2:00PM-3:30PM last night, didn't see a single squid caught. Doughnuts! Sounds like they got a couple last night, which was one squid per 5 people. Mid-week should bring a few nice days.

Thanks happyfriggincamper! Always nice getting a feed of squid and helping other get a few too!

Thanks Lightningx! Always a blast when the calamari are playing friendly.

Thanks Sebb, you're right about me loving my squid fishing. I think what I enjoy most is spending my free time outdoors relaxing and chatting to everyone. Great day for me fishing is when everyone catches some dinner haha.
