Coronavirus: Study warns mutated virus strain could be more contagious

A new, unreviewed report theorises the coronavirus may have mutated to become more contagious shortly before it spread widely around the globe, but the jury is still out on what that means for the fight against COVID-19.

The new strain of the virus identified in the study is thought to have mutated in Europe, before spreading and even replacing the strain of the virus it mutated from in some areas.

The report is based on analysis of more than 6000 coronavirus sequences collected by the Global Initiative for Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID), a joint program between the German, American and Singaporean governments, supported by private philanthropy.

The program is reportedly receiving hundreds of new coronavirus sequences daily during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Scientists at the USA’s Los Alamos National Laboratory, Duke University and the UK’s University of Sheffield compiled the report, which is yet to be peer-reviewed by other scientists or published in any medical or scientific journals.

It was also dismissed as “conjecture” by Columbia University virologist Angela Rasmussen who said the authors of the study did not do a single experiment and had failed to prove the mutation was “functionally significant”.

Their study identified 14 mutations, particularly focusing on one called D614G, which changes the virus’ spike proteins, the ones that bind to cells in the virus host.

Spike proteins are also the primary target of vaccines and antibody-based treatments.

The mutation Spike D614G is of “urgent concern”, the report claims.

I'm not going to get in to what's wrong with the statistical analysis that's going on here. I don't think the dr has made a mistake, I think he's intentionally misleading.

"Less deadly than we realised"

Another way of saying that is 'more infectious than we realised.

This entire piece is framed to try and play down the disease, because it 'might' not kill as many people as the unquoted 'experts' said it will. They are playing a percentage game, wihtout realising that '50 times less deadly' also means '50 times more widespread'.

If, and i stress the if, the death rate is as low as 2 in 1000, we can extrapolate some information based on the 'official' statistics from the United States. Keep in mind the official statistics are heavily 'adjusted' as Trump rushes to try and cover his ass for soemthing he repeatedly told everyone not to worry about. There are some pretty solid reports that number could be double or even triple, but today we'll use the official statistics.


At the time of this post the current death toll is 74121 with 1256590 cases and 205261 recovered.

If you scroll down slightly on the same world of metres page, this puts the death rate at TWENTY SEVEN PERCENT. or if we have use fractions, 270/1000 of cases that are no longer 'active'.

We can't use creative mathematics to adjust the death toll, so instead lets use the numbers quoted in the article to see if we can make some sense of this.

Dr whoever said maybe 1 in 1000 people who got the virus would die. If that's true, then the virus has already infected 74 million people in the states, not the 1.2 million in the official statistics.

So EITHER he's objectively wrong OR the virus has already gone through about 1/4 of the US population.

Either way. playing down something that's killing about 3000 people a day with a death toll that's actually accelerating is appalling.

Even if his statistics are right, which I don't believe they are, the messaging that's coming with them is unbelievably dangerous and likely to get a whole heap more people killed.

If he’s using the Santa Clara antibody study to back up his claims that test was badly flawed with a false positive rate equal to the rate of infected people the study picked up.

The ABC is funding by the government, and are smack bang in the middle of the political spectrum. The Murdoch led media has drawn mainstream narratives so far to the right, anyone actually offering an objective viewpoint seems to be way out on the left.
