What's your murray cod setup? Should I get TD Bullup or Pork Chop?
Hi fellow FV members,
I'm planning to upgrade my current baitcast rod (Catana 561 one piece 6-8 kg) for murray cod. Managed to narrow down the options to TD Bullup (4-7 kg) or TD Pork Chop (5-9 kg). Can't seem to decide. To pair with Daiwa T3 and 40 lb line.
I've done some research and got random results. Robbie Fishing uses 6kg rod (though he uses 50 lb line on his Curado 200) and yet so many others go 20 lb rod up to 30 lb rod, thats like over 10kg rod class.
What's yours? And why.

Check the guides Seb, from memory one of the issues I had with the bullup was that you couldn’t run heavier leaders on it
There is always more to learn , fish to catch , places to see and friends to make.

Cod raider, curado, 50lb braid + leader, cheers davo
It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them

I’ve got one of the BVC684XH rods from the Bone range,
If you are looking at a quality travel rod , I’d recommend them.
Go in store and have a play.

impoundment barra raider (6" 6-10kg), curado 200, 50lb braid.
the 50lb braid is for a better retrieval rate of snagged lures.

go the pork chop, cast weight is much more suited to casting cod lures.
Rod ratings vary a bit between brands etc. for instance the venom robbie runs is very heavy for a 6kg rod
For what it's worth I have a few outfits for cod now. Rod ratings are 12-20lb (approx 6-10kg), 4-9kg and 8-15kg

Shimando something 3-piece with curado something reel - 30lb braid. Sorry cant remember and dont really pay attention or memory to it haha. Bought it cos i didnt really know what i was getting when starting out so that's what the CA guy sold me. I haven't caught enough cod on it or big enough to give you a solid review of how it performs haha.
I think robbie uses venom rods, which would be outta your price range - but id try to match his rod weight and action since the majority of cod fishing you do matches his.
If you are thinking about venturing into throwing big baits, id get a suitable budget rod for that style of fishing and focus your money on improving your rod for the type of fishing you'll do the most.
What were your list of requirements?

Re: What's your murray cod setup? Should I get TD Bullup or Pork Chop?
Thanks all.
Well i already have lunker hunter rod which is a 2-6 kg rod. Though has a strong butt and landed 64cm cod on it, casting heavy lures on it isnt easy.
The current rod Catana is a one piece, though graphite and all, its pretty heavy, so I want to upgrade it. Also I like the idea to have a travel rod, easy to carry while bush bashing and if one day fishing for barra up north.
I guess I'll get the pork chop.
And yeah Maz, that Venom 6kg looks heavier than the usual shimano/daiwa 6kg.
My lunker hunter 6kg rod feels like a 4 kg.
Maz, do you have those three for casting purposes? To cast diff lures and weights. Or heavier ones for targetting bigger fish etc?
