What is this fish
I caught this guy yesterday in PPB. I found out what it is after a quick search but thought you guys might have some fun trying to work this one out. First one I've ever seen.

Yep. Hypoplectrodes nigroruber and they're everywhere across the southern half of the country around rocky shorelines and reefsIrishfisherman wrote: ↑Mon Nov 04, 2019 11:41 amI think it’s a banded seaperch, caught one before and tasted great.

Re: What is this fish
On the Banded Seaperch, and what looks like some more reef type fish in the bucket. Is PPB different to WP for fishing, does one have more reef than the other.
Here in SA, Spencer Gulf is more reefy than St Vincent's Gulf but that being said, the closer you get to the open ocean in both Gulfs the more reefier it gets.
Is it similar there?
Cheers Bugs

Re: What is this fish
WP doesn't have as much reef, it's like a giant mud pool with murky water and the tides are a lot stronger. But yeah, the closer to the ocean the more reef there is. There's a few random reefs inside PPB though away from the mouth which is where I found this guy.Bugatti wrote: ↑Mon Nov 04, 2019 3:58 pmOn the Banded Seaperch, and what looks like some more reef type fish in the bucket. Didn't know you guys would work it out so fast. It's the first time I've ever seen one before, thought it was a rare fish.

Re: What is this fish
there was also a senator wrasse and a male sea perch in the bucket, as well as a few snapper
Re: What is this fish
Thanks eddyt, that answered the reef conundrum to a T (see what I did there eddyt , to a t , , , , I crack me up )
But on a serious not, it does help explain the Snapper reports and where as well.
But more importantly, way to go with the catch, nice haul
Cheers, Bugatti, not striped or banded BUT I do get a bit speckled sometimes

Re: What is this fish
I also was stumped when I pulled one up last year. Fisheries also confirmed it as banded sea perch
