Exceeding lure weight rating on rod

Hi all,

Bought some new lures that I just realised are 5.5 to 6 grams in weight. But all my rods are only rated for lures from 1 to 5 grams. Would they be ok casting these lures that slightly exceed the rating?

Was going to just give ut as try, but not too keen on losing any rod tips!!! The rod in particulsr I use most of the time is a Daiwa TD Black, Blackjack model: https://www.anglerswarehouse.com.au/pro ... _rod_16544

1-5 gm is the best recommended weight. You'll feel 5.5 and 6 gm are pushing it a bit. Use the momentum to cast, forcing the rod to use more of the butt / parabolic power, dont whip/whack too much, just let the lure fly from its weight.
Longer line out when casting. Shorter line usually put more pressure on the tip.

Most of the time it’s no issue. Just don’t flog the Christ out of it on the cast forcing it to bend in ways it doesn’t want to and it will be fine.

I have casted uptown 18gms on a rod that says 10gms.
Of tou know how to do it and be carefull you will be ok.
But as ducky said pay attention to how you do it.
I used to be worried about similar things before specially since my rods are not on the cheaper side these days. But you get over it eventually..
Make sure your knots are well tied and wont tangle either as that will be the end if it tangles on the way out.
5gms and casting 6gms is a defenite yes from me. But do so at your own peril...


Also be aware..
When fishing plastics a 1/4 oz rating means a 1/4 oz jighead. Not a 1/4oz jighead with a 5inch plastic on it.
But I constantly flout that rule and so do many people I know..

don't worry about the ratings on the rods.. assume that is just an excuse that the manufacturer uses to reject your refund when something goes wrong. I've been always throwing metal lures double the rating never had any problem.
