Under powered but it will move you around ... slowly ... in some cases under powered can be more hazardous then over powered.. depending where you fish.

Why would underpowered be dangerous, other than not being able to escape wind/storm or dodge reefs quickly enough?hornet wrote:Under powered but it will move you around ... slowly ... in some cases under powered can be more hazardous then over powered.. depending where you fish.

In a bar crossing ?
In a head on strong current loaded ?
Anyone that's been around boats long enough would have been in one of the above predicaments at sometime.

I thought you were buying in the original heading hence my reply, in fresh water that engine would be fine, in salt my later comments stand..

once you have been on a boat/driven one in some reasonable chop, all these will make sense.

Correct; thus far I've only been out in a kayak. Hoping to get a boat in the next year. I remember that I saw a 4.8 m Quintrex which was fully outfitted and was having difficulty being sold. However, it was underpowered, having only a 30 hp out of a max 75 hp. I guess I understand why it couldn't be sold.purple5ive wrote:he doesnt have experience with a boat hence the reply..hornet wrote:In a big following sea loaded ?tropicalfisher wrote:Why would underpowered be dangerous, other than not being able to escape wind/storm or dodge reefs quickly enough?hornet wrote:Under powered but it will move you around ... slowly ... in some cases under powered can be more hazardous then over powered.. depending where you fish.

Re: selling 1986 Stejcraft 4.9 Half Cabin $4990 ono
underpowered boats usually dont sell very fast at all..
if fishing rivers and dams etc, where there not much tidal or waves/chop influence then its all well and good.
once you have swell and chop/current the boat gets pushed along with it and thats when you need power to get out, be it making a run for cover when a storm approaches or just trying to keep the boat from rolling over or pushed into dangerous territory like rocks / becahing itself etc etc.. if the boat is underpowered in those situations you will be in a lot of trouble
always buy adequately powered boats for these reasons.
