Just wondering if a 40 size reel would be too small for ballooning out baits for sharks. Specifically I'm looking at a marquesa MA40 which can take 700m of 65lb line - presumably I'll be able to fit a fair bit more 40 or 50lb line on it than that.
You still going with that hair brain scheme of shark fishing from your yak ?

A large helium balloon with a basket large enough for you would be a good idea if things get out of hand...

My 50TW holds 850yds of 50lb according to the web.
I'd say the 40 should be fine, I know some ppl even use a 30 on the 90 mile, but they are spooling with braid.

Sweet. This will be braid with a 100m or so of mono on top I guess.
As a rule how much line is needed for this sort of fishing?

Depends how far you want to put baits out I guess. Take that into consideration and allow yourself enough to not get spooled on the first run.(within reason of course as many ppl have still been spooled even with sufficient line, there's some big fish out there.)

How far would most of those fish go on the first run?

All fish are different, but I wouldn't want any less that 250m left on the reel, myself.

That should be fine then unless the bait needs to be more than 500m out

Yeah, I've got a Tld 30 for my heavy outfit. 200+ mtrs of 24 mono on top of about 4-450 of dacron.
If I get spooled on that, I'll take my hat off to the fish.
