Lake Eildon camp/fish

Post by Joker91 » Fri Mar 11, 2022 12:53 pm

Hope you are all well and smashing those fish!

I am planning to head up to Lake Eildon tomorrow and hopefully find some where to fish and camp.

Couple of questions i have that i was hoping you could help with are:
1. Any recommendation for camping spots? all paid sites are taken so i am just looking for some random spot to pitch a tent. Any ideas on a good spot so i can try?
2. Have you ever tried catching shrimp or yabby's in lake eildon? i have one of those square nets but never used it?

Any other tips or hints are welcomed!

Do you have a boat? There are a series of boat only campsites around the lake that generally don't fill up even in the peak season.

The other option is if you have 4wd to go to sites like Raids Inlet which are only really accessible via 4WD due to the long dirt roads there.

There are several campsites all along that area so if you leave early tomorrow and get there reasonably early, you'd have to time to explore the sites along the lake and you'll find something available eventually.

throw your yabby net in and see how you go, ive never yabbied there, might be best to try at night time.
fishing wise head up one of the arms, the main arm will be like sydney harbour during the day.

There are also some free camping spots near the big river crossing on the eildon-Jamieson road. It’s not signposted, just a driveway off to the left just after you pass over the big river bridge as you head to Jamieson. Not on the lake and first in, best dressed.

I have a boat not not taking it up this time.

I got a stock territory AWD. How do you think it’ll go down those roads?

I’ll give the tabby net a go and let you know what happens.

Benders - unfortunately I can’t leave until 1pm. So no early spots for me

My mate caught a decent yabby from there.
Just put a chicken bone in the yabby net thing and leave it for a while.

Just to close off this post, it was a very unsuccessful weekend (from a fishing perspective).

We sent up camp around goughes bay and tried a couple of spots but got nothing but snags on trees.

On the way home we stopped off at the poundage and again got nothing at all. Spent more time driving down random roads trying to find a decent spot then actually fishing.

If anyone has any hidden gem spots where you can drive up to by car, park and camp please share. Scouts honour to keep this info to my self :) (anywhere in Vic is fine)

Besides the lack of fish, it was still a great weekend with heaps of exploring around eildon.

Eildon is a big lake, it can be daunting and difficult to fish.
I fished Pondage few times, it is a hit and miss there.
I fished Bonnie Doon abd Jerrusalem Creek, years ago though. Caught reddies. Not as many reddies now.
