Wouldn’t surprise me, there was that old hermit around Renmark ages ago.

The police have interviewed him a few weeks ago

If anything the eccentric recluses cover has been blown perhaps as a ploy to catch someone else. Andrew Rule and John Silvester have close ties to the police.

apparently the button man is real and known by some Mansfield locals.
but most of that article is totally exaggerated. I don't think he's a high country serial killer.

“ They say no one knows he is near until he decides to make himself known. A wildlife photographer spent days taking shots in the area near the Button-Man’s camp. When he returned home and downloaded his photos to his computer there was one unexplained shot of the photographer asleep inside his tent. No one knows who took the shot.”

Call me a sceptic, but if someone took a photo of me, inside my tent with a dslr, the shutter would sure as hell wake me up. No amount of “stealth” makes the shutter sound any quieter.

Pretty sure that bit is made up because it's a common trope of internet scary stories that I would read when I was a kid.
Also convenient that said photo is not provided.

Sometimes people don't want to be found and other times people get lost it is pretty wild country out there and to say that a certain person has a scope on the whole area is dreaming. Media hype at it's best remember this has been written from an office in the city no where near there:tu:
Russ and Caroline didn't want to be found.

It goes back earlier than that, I've heard war stories of Gurkhas in North Africa sneaking into German camps and knifing a bunch of soldiers in a tent but leaving one of them alive. No idea if it is actually true or not, Gurkhas are scary motherfuckers though so if anyone could pull it off it'd be them.

Most DSLRs have a feature called QUIET where the shutter is basically half the sound of normal
this is used at church services, or child photographers to keep noise down.

you can also use the Mirror up function on DSLRs to achieve a similar result.

in saying that, i doubt a bush hermit would have any idea how to activate and use those functions.

Photographing wildlife, it may well have already been on quiet.
