Keeping earthworms alive.
Every time i go fishing I go through the same problem when collecting earthworms.
How to keep my worms alive.
I would like to know the BEST method to keep worms alive UNTIL I actually go away on a trip , and also the BEST way to keep the worms alive while away.
So that may be as long as 2 weeks.
Could memebers that have a foolproof method please post.
The container you use.
The substance you fill your container with.
Any food you put in?
Any water - and how much?
How you stop the worms from cooking during hot weather.
I'ld like a method to adopt that I can use every time.
Not the bull I am doing like can't even find an empty ice cream container with a lid.
I used a pringles container today.
One thing I noticed when I was gathering the worms , they all intertwined themselves into a ball.
I don't want that happening in my adopted method.

Secondly prevent them from escaping, have a lid on the container, with air holes in it.

When I used to work in a tackle shop. We would just keep them moist and put them in the fridge. Keep them as cool as possible without freezing them imo

Re: Keeping earthworms alive.
I put them in the soil they come from, damp newspaper up top, shredded newspaper mixed in with the soil if I have a few that I want to keep for a while. As others have mentioned, pierce the container lid and fridge/esky them in the warmer months!
cheers

Re: Keeping earthworms alive.
Okay
So keeping them in the fridge for a week is fine?
So far the plan is an Esky.
I got a tiny one that holds maybe 4 cans.
Looks like I'll dedicate it for worms.
Plus I'll get one of those plastic things full of blue liquid.
You freeze them.
Chuck my worm container in that.
wet newspaper on top and shredded mixed with the dirt.
What makes a good container?
plastic , metal , wood?
I would go the whole hog and build a worm farm , but my interest in fishing is almost zero for the past few years.
Lifes a b!tch pretty much got in the way.

Re: Keeping earthworms alive.
I picked this up from a friend, he told me that the soil must be changed frequently especially when in a small container, first of all because when the worms excrete they build up a little ammonia, and thats one thing that kills them as well as the build up of moisture. So containers that come in sections are good. I suppose you can also use a lot of newspaper to collect the moisture.
Here fishy fishy.......

Re: Keeping earthworms alive.
I normally put them in a small container with some soil from wherever u caught them from and keep them in the shade away from sun, in a shed should be good and they will stay alive
Best so far: 47cm aus salmon, 41cm mullet, 40cm king George whiting , 38cm Bream, 35cm flathead, 33 cm pinky, squid 20cm. 2 sting rays caught caught, 1 took a rod as a souvenir. Need to catch snapper... :fish11:

I normally catch them just before I go, at least u gaurantee they are alive, it only takes a few mins to get a few, u can always keep them in a pot of plants, at least ull gaurantee ull find them and they are good for the plants, other tip moist soil underneath plants ull be sure to catch big ones

I use a small Plano bait container, it has a polystyrene insert, and I have left about 60 worms in it for around a week between outings with no problems. As suggested you have to keep them cool.
