Any 'soft' tape is fine. Medical, electrical, masking, duct etc doesn't matter.

With arthritis in fingers of both hands the thicker mono is easier to handle for me. Cheers muzza43.

Muzza I agree completely, braid is a ***** on your fingers as its so fine and rough compared to mono.
When I 1st started using braid the braids of those days were even worse, the amount of bad cuts I got from using it was huge.
every trip I would come back with many cuts, some every deep. ( forgot to take my finger off the line when surf casting  )

For me if you don't have to use braid then don't, apparently fish are still being caught on mono line ;)

cheers
Nick

I am a masking tape fan never had any braid slip since i started using it. The only reason you would use mono prior to top shotting with braid is your wallet. My only problem i have with braid is the friction burns

If it's needed i would rather back fill the spool with mono than build it up with tape but if you aren't actually building it up and simply giving the braid something to grip on tape is the way to go

I used to use mono as backing but one time a fish took all the braid and half the mono I spent ages getting the braid back on the reel all the while thinking I hope the joining knots hold they did but I gave the mono away after that

I've always used a few turns of mono as backing then fill with braid
Also storms on the spool on your reel. If you have a traditional spool most people fill with mono for a bit then use the braid for the rest. This is so they can get a fill spool of line cause it casts a lot better.

For shallow spools. People use tape or few turns of the handle with mono. Then fill with braid. Shallow spools only fit a maximum of 120-150m of line depwnding on thickness of line.
