North east / yarra valley trout 22/2/2020

Post by Sebb » Sat Feb 22, 2020 9:21 pm

As much as I love fly fishing for trout, spinning for stream trout has its own special place. Especially on a light tackle designed for it.

Went to three different rivers/streams between 10am-4:30pm. Armed with the stuff below.

Daiwa Presso 602 ULFS 1-4lb rod
Daiwa Freams LT 2000
Daiwa Jbraidx8 6lb
Blackmagic fluorocarbon leader 4lb
Mepps spinner (various) thanks to

Starring rainbow, brown and red.

Surprisingly all of them were clear enough, considering we had heavy rain 2-3 days ago.
What a great day it was. Landed three colour species : rainbow, brown and red(fin). 6 fish landed, lost/dropped about 3-4 and tapped (but not hooked) 4-5. Oh and free grapes on the side.

Water level and flow were perfect, not too fast and not too high/low. The approach was simple, I stood on the bank (into the water only if necessary) and all the casts were almost always sorta 45° upstream and across, targetting pools, backwater, bubble trails and any sorta vortex. Ripples and runs were a bit tricky on light weight spinner.

The retrieve was simple, cast and slow roll. Though I had to adjust the speed of the retrieve to make sure the blade spins properly. That was pretty much how I fished the three of them.

The rod was absolutely pleasant to use. This was the first time I used the rod. During all the fights, the rod absorbed the shock well, flexed parabolic from the tip to the middle section (imagine a squid rod, kinda similar).

A bit troubled with the accuracy as expected from a slow action rod but otherwise it did the job really well. My mate use zodias rod and it was harder to use. Fair trade of the less accuracy for everything else the Presso got for stream fishing.

I remember I used Gen Black v2 (a very fast action rod) and though I could feel every vibrations and able to cast accurately, I lost a trout in tight water because the rod was "too stiff", too much tension and 'bounce' back almost too quickly (as a fast rod should be). Now I use it for bream fishing.

The Freams LT 2000 reel is less than 200gm, perfect match for the rod.
The mepps without any doubts, superb for stream trout fishing.
