Photo of Dead Murray Cod – bad PR?

Post by PedroArvy » Wed Apr 13, 2016 1:32 pm

Our club has fishing competitions where it’s allowed to kill fish. And in a recent competition the following photo was posted on our website:

Personally, I am against the killing of any Murray Cod. Although it is legal, I think the aura around this fish and the fact they don’t taste particularly good means you should let them go. I also assume the community agrees. That’s why I am making this post. We are trying to introduce a catch and release competition but there are some older members who have a certain old fashioned view of the world.

Do you think such photos are bad for our PR or neutral, after all you can kill Murray Cod if you wish? Would this discourage you from joining a fishing club?

I know a lot of guys that love eating murry cod so it depends how you cook it, There not the easiest fish to catch so if someone manages to get a legal one and want to eat it then go for it I say, your makin it sound like people tie it to the back of there cars and parade it down the street, if its legal and one wants to eat it then go for it. I got a 6kg murry cod few years back and it was beautifully eating very soft melted in my mouth..

The problem I have when people are abused for taking a Cod to eat is really they have done nothing wrong. I catch and release most of the fish I catch.
If people fish within the laws so be it.
As to your question if it would be bad for the club to post such a picture. I would not because of the bad feeling towards it that it may generate.

Just looks like the guy is holdin up his catch and he's proud of it, good on him! the fish looks good it's been gutted and not dripping and covered in blood, good photo i say.
Only people that would look at this and get affected by it is greenies, anti fishing activists, or other jealous fisho that can't catch one so they just want to hate on it.

Nothing wrong with catching one for a feed at all good on him. Once I have enough for a feed I release everything else if its safe for the fish to be returned but sometime that's not always the case so I would rather use it for a feed than release it and let it suffer.

Within legal limits theres no issue at all for any species.

As for PR. No kill shots look great. Any and all could be used against you by the greenie community. However provided they aren't in bad taste there's no other controls you can put in place for that one.

While i'm an advocate of catch and release there is nothing wrong with keeping a fish for a feed. I don't agree with a lot of bag limits or legal lengths but one fish is probably ok. If it was a pic of ten of them of questionable length, then i'd be sharpening the pitchforks.
