2023 Snapper Season
Still a bit early I know, but has anyone started targeting snapper yet?
I heard the landbased guys are doing ok in PPB & WPB is slowly starting to fire up.
This weeks weather has got me pretty motivated to start the season early!

Re: 2023 Snapper Season
Just watching the water temps, hoping to get the yak out next few days.
Although a bit sceptical about snapper in numbers, looking forward to the first outing this season

Re: 2023 Snapper Season
I got a 3kg one off Hastings a few weeks ago. I sorta classed it as a winter red though, rather than the first off the 23/24 season.

Fished Altona from the kayak last night with 7 others, no decent models caught just small pinkies. I Picked up a salmon and snotty Trev. There are some big schools of baitfish around. Not long now!

Re: 2023 Snapper Season
Anyone got some advice on where the PPB snapper might be lurking on the weekend? By the looks of the graph below, the north end is the warmest, but I'm not sure how all this rain/runoff is going to effect everything. I always had luck fishing Williamstown this time of the year, but last year was terrible thanks to all the floods.

Re: 2023 Snapper Season
They've been getting a few off Clifton Springs, 6M of water, with smaller fish around that 3-4m mark.
Portarlington have had a few shallower, plenty caught from the pier on bait and plastics.
Can't comment on much elsewhere!

Re: 2023 Snapper Season
Looking for any advice that can be given. Used to fish ppb when i was abt 13 (5 years ago) and never had any luck on anything but small pinkies. This season we've got a 4.75 steber and i'm determined to catch a good couple. I'm trying to do everything i'm told e.g. sound up fish (having said that only have an old 300watt garmin), burley with both chopped pillies and pellets with tuna oil, snelled running rig and either bought pillies/ squid, or fresh slimies and yakkas. Still absolutely nothing having said that i've only rlly managed to get out on low barometer and a northerly if that really matters. Despite the old and underpowered sounder, i'm pretty confident i've sounded up a couple good marks fishing on both the flats and reef from 6-16m around sandy and black rock. I've got no idea what i'm doing wrong but any advice is much appreciated
cheers
