1/4oz Jighead too heavy?

hi guys,

Pretty self explanatory, I was just wondering if fishing with a 1/4oz jighead is too heavy for flathead and other species? I have been having trouble casting 1/8th jigheads more than 15-20m, and I would prefer not to spend money on a new packet of 1/6oz jig heads.
Cheers

few variables here, but largely should be alright. Flathead arent picky. As long as you are able to bounce it off the bottom on the retrieve

1/4 or 1/2 or even 1oz all work fine for flathead.

if you are comfortable with a 1/4 and can comfortably work the plastic the way Flathead like them, then there’s no problems

its either 8lb or 10lb or 20lb. I'm thinking its most likley 10lb cos I have managed to pull in some decent pinkies with the drag locked (for some reason)

Could always run your 1/8 jig heads and just put a few split shots.1 foot up from jig head

Not too heavy for flatties, they'll smash anything that moves. Other species may require more finesse but it's always a balancing act with jigheads and depends on your gear and the conditions. You'll struggle with the light jigheads unless you have line, rod, reel and conditions working in your favour.

If targeting flatties I prefer a 1/4 ounce jig on a larger hook...even in 2m of water coz I want to get the plastic down fast to where they live and make a little puff of sand or mud when lifting and dropping the jig. Bigger plastics with for example paddle tails sink slower too so you need to consider that too.

I have used 10 lb before and haven’t had problems getting distance with a 1/8th but if are just use a heavier one. I’m sure you will still get flatties :)
