Budget spin rod and reel under $70 Luring soft plastics

Post by shazac » Sun Jan 22, 2023 9:58 pm

Hi Any suggestion for a 3-6kg [what I think I need] fast action rod and 2500 [?] reel under $60-$70.
I'm a novice angler looking to buy a cheap spin fishing rod
I'm land based targeting snapper (mainly pinkies) and aussie salmon though i'll take anything.
I usually fish st kilda pier which is now temporarily closed or one of the neighbouring piers, and I'm looking for a luring/ soft plastics rod though also to use slugs and spinners for salmon. If i spend more on the rod real less for the lures and jig head.

I doubt you will find anything for $70 that will cover what you're fishing for. What will happen is that both the rod and reel will **** themselves after a few uses and you'll have to buy a new combo anyway. Just spend a bit more because what you are after is just rubbish

it will be a tight these days, but i think you could pick something up on special.

shimano sienna quickfire for $99 is a good value combo.

bcf sometimes have deals on some savage gear combo's.

some guys might laugh, but kmart have a jarvis walker combo i think its 3-6kg 7ft for about $55. its a graphite composite rod, not quite as light as some rods for a few extra $$$ but probably less chance of breaking. i have and older one in a 2-5kg about 6 years old, caught plenty of fish, rod is still going well, the reel was going well until about 6 months ago, the misso was using it and the reel seat has losened without her realizing and it came off and ended up on the bottom of PPB, i forgot to wash it out until the next day, now its quite rough even after i pulled it appart and cleaned and lubed it so ive replaced it. it wasnt a fantastic reel, but it was adequate, you should get a couple of years out of it if looked after, probably less if you dont.

and then you will want to buy braid, so add that cost on top.

maybe try one of these if you can find one in the weight rating your looking for.

And Do you think the Kmart Rod is worth it what about the other cheap brands on bcf such as Okuma and Prymly?
and any info on the Daiwa D-Shock on anaconda will probably go for the sienna quick-fire if I can find it a little cheaper do you think 2-4kg is enough
Thanks for all your help its really appreciated
p.s. I have some cheap 15lb braid seems to be more like a 10lb braid in Diameter, which is 0.14mm

i often see a lot to "broken tip" comments on graphite rods. they can break easily if used incorrectly, eg high sticking, casting too heavy lures/sinkers, damage during transport, i suspect most is from this even though the comments say first cast, not my fault etc.

2-4kg will be fine for pinkies. will be a battle with decent snapper but plenty have done it.
id go 6lb braid, 10lb at the most, but thats me.

cheap diawa/okuma/pryml will probably be ok, dont expect too much though. the kmart rod will work but again its a budget combo, dont expect too much. you dont need the best gear to catch a fish and have a good time.

go and have a look, if your unsure just shell out the extra for the sienna quickfire as they're reasonable for the money. look after it remember graphite breaks easily.
