I remember I was on his charter, he liked better than average gear. And a lot of better than average gear are split grip.
I have those plastic rod holders on my kayak from railblaza and berkley, so far no issue. But maybe diff on those steel rod holders.

Apart from slightly less weight is there any advantages in performance?

Especially when fishing for whiting with bait there doesn’t appear to be much of a distinct advantage I can understand a light tackle casting rod that bass or bream guys cast all day.

Used split grip in wpb for years without issue. From heavier tackle to light weight stuff. Prefer solid butts but most of the time you can line them up so the rod holder is on the eva not the blank.

On the topic of rod holders. I knocked up a set for my boat with the fancier tube style holders instead of the wire type. Man tube holders suck. If you've got the option go the wire type every time.
