Repairable?

Post by Kimtown » Mon Nov 08, 2021 2:37 pm

:ft: Snapped a god damn terez offshore last weekend. Had what I thought was a light snag, lifted the rod instead of pulling and snap…. Rod in half. Obviously I shouldn’t have lifted with a snag but I wanted keep my rig and I didn’t think it would snag as easily as what it did in really really soft reef…. Which leads me to believe their may have been a real slight crack in it to begin with…

Anyway, do we think this is repairable? One positive thing is it’s broken directly in the centre of the guides, so maybe can turn it into a 2 piece? Obviously it’s not going to be hauling in big kingies, makos or tuna any more… (not that it ever did :oo: ) but might be able to still use it as a somewhat decent 2 piece bay rod?

Seems an incredible shame to bin a $250+ Rod

I thought they were 2 piece and separated where the rod meets the grip?

Take it to a good rod builder, tvey should be able to make ferrules out of the edges and make it a 2 piece rod.

Try ask rod building people, maybe doable to make into two piece rod but don't think it will be the same.

Ya I wouldn’t expect it to ever be the same but still hoping it can be repaired into an ok gummy/snapper rod for the bay

Strange for a Terez to snap there.

Bin it to be honest. You could get it repaired but it's not going to be the same and will be vulnerable to snap again on a decent fish.

Get sandpaper, dodgy old fairly flexible fibreglass rod you don't give give **** about, stanley knife, hacksaw, epoxy glue like araldite, guide wrapping thread, resin and rig up a small jig to hold the rod.

1. Sand both ends of the break
2. Cut off all guides from **** glass rod with Stanley knife
3. Size up a portion of said rod that will fit snuggly INSIDE the busted Terez
4. Cut approx 10cm section of **** rod with hacksaw
5. Sand the cut ends smooth and rough up the outer blank
6. Glue 1/2 of your section into the lower half of the Terez
7. Once dry, repeat step 6 with the top half of Terez
8. Once dry, place now 1 piece rod onto the jig you knocked up.
9. Wrap thread as tight as possible for the approximate length of the glued insert, building up thickness at the portion of previous break that didn't mate with the other half.
10. Apply resin to the thread making sure to keep rod turning to keep resin smooth and even
11. Once dry, go fishing.

It won't ever be the same but is still fishable as a bottom basher and is a very similar process to how the male ferrule is made to be used on a 2 piece rod

Well I took it to my cousins shop and while he did say it was repairable it wasn’t really worth the effort. Thankfully I got a $250 voucher for Xmas so walked out with a 7ft pe3/5 saltist hyper

My first Daiwa lol. I wonder how it’ll compare to the terez?
