Is this setup too light for rock fishing?

Post by Hiryuu » Thu May 27, 2021 9:41 am

Hi everyone.
I have a Daiwa Infeet Z 732LFS rod paired with a 2500 reel on soft plastic. Is this a possible setup to do rock fishing down at Lorne? haha. Or do I need something bit more heavier - Maybe a medium heavy rod? Thanks :)

If you find a decent day shouldn't be a problem to fish certain areas of rock lodges. Its not my preferred style of fishing on the Rocks down there (Bait & Lure on 12'& 9' respectively).

2 popular rock platforms there are Jump Rock & Artillery Rocks. Not sure you'd be able to get it far enough or work it for long enough before retrieve at Jump Rock. @ Artillery, from the left hand side after you get down the stairs, you may be able to snag some Mullet and Smaller Salmon in the patch of water in front of the sand. The protruding rock's on either side should get you into decent water with a 7'.

Good Luck!
Az.

Casting lures or bait fishing?
For bait fishing, definitely too short and too light.
For flicking lures, depends where you fish as mentioned by azkay. Generally I'd still use a longer rod for rock fishing around there, a 9ft rod. The class is depend on what you after and what lures.

It depends on what you're fishing for. Little reefies in close, trevally etc you should be ok.

If you hook a big salmon on that setup from the rocks in Lorne, you're going to have a full on fight on your hands.

I would highly, HIGHLY recommend at least a 9 footer for lures, and a 12 footer for baits while rock fishing, give yourself the extra length and power to keep yourself safe while you're getting experience.
