Budget high speed spin reel ($80 - $120) for casting metal?

Post by Sebb » Mon Apr 12, 2021 4:18 pm

I haven't been checking the market (used to, not anymore) and now I'm looking for a budget reel to cast 40-50gm metals off the surf for salmon. To pair with Veritas 922H (29-68gm casting weight).

Don't think I need specific surf reel, any spin reel with high speed will do.
I tried with Aernos XT 3000 and it was way too slow, few times the metal was actually going faster riding the waves than me winding as fast as I could.

Can't and won't afford/get expensive reel as I don't go surf fishing very often and the possibility of damaging the reel with salt etc. Breaking a budget reel after few use won't hurt as much.

I'm thinking a 3000 size so it'll be light enough, easy to cast for few hours. Maybe 6.0:2 ratio. With 15lb braid.
I thought of Sedona, but thought I'd ask for other options.

Any recommendations?

3000 is too small for surf spinning.
I would recommend a 4k BG or (eliminator) in the high speed version.
The BG is built tough. The drag clicker on the 4k is a **** design. But it still works OK...

Also look at those quantum ones at dinga..

for something a bit different, i have a piscifun honor xt 4000 high speed retrieve. i think it was about $70 off aliexpress or amazon or somewhere. very smooth reel, feels good to me, time will tell how it lasts. i decided to give it a try after seeing robbie alexander (robbiefishing) using one on you tube.

Would love to have them, quite heavy though. The 4000 size is 405gm.

Don't worry too much about the weight. You have a 9 foot rod it will be tip heavy as is. The heavier reel will balance it out better.
Besides that surf spinning is always tip down not up so the weight issue is not even a thing to worry.

I can lend you mine to try if you want and see if your happy before purchase.

The only other lightweight reel I can think of is the aird x . Bcf have them. So you can check them out there..

You're not wrong. I have about a dozen rods and reels, each for their own purposes. The one that keeps coming back to me is to swap the Aernos XT 3000 (it's a tiny reel and slow ratio) with something faster and maybe bigger (4000). I had stradic ci4 4000 and that was great, but I don't have it anymore and can't afford buying a new one at the moment.

Good idea to check with Wayne, might be able to get myself a good deal on the old models. I'm not too fuss about brand for surf fishing, as long as it works and doesn't feel like cheap plastic kmart reels.

Humm true, didn't think of that.
BG and eliminator have 5.2:1 ratio, you find them fast enough?

Thanks for the offer. I can check the BG/Eliminator at a shop to feel how heavy it is on hand and on a rod. BCF/Anaconda/Hoppers Bait and Tackle are all about 10 mins drive from my home during quiet traffic, if not less.

Thought about it, but the 3000 is only 5.0:1 ratio and the 4000 is 5.2:1 ratio. Not fast enough I think.
