Is my reel too big?
Hi All,
I’ve been reading the forum for a little bit - lots of good information here. I’m just getting back in to fishing with one of my daughters. Mostly targeting trout / freshwater lakes.
I have a Shimano Ballistix Pro 762 2-4 kg “Soft Plastic Spin” rod which I’ve had a few years but hardly used with a Shimano Sienna FD 4000 reel. I think I received poor advice (and/or listened poorly) because that reel seems too big.
I bought a cheap 6’ Silstar Rod and Okuma FA30 reel for my daughter to use and it seems much lighter and I guess “balanced”.
So the question is it worth replacing the 4000 reel with a 2500? How much difference will it make? Trying to keep the cost as low as possible at this stage.
Cheers,
Glenn

Yep. Just find a 2500 Sienna on sale from anywhere and the balance will be a lot better

Re: Is my reel too big?
I agree with cobby a 2500 size reel is the perfect balanced outfit. A 2500 shimano sienna won't break the bank and is a solid performer for the price, I have two of these on my trout / bream rods..
He who has the most fishing rods WINS !

Re: Is my reel too big?
Yup, as suggested already. Get the 2500 to match 2-4 kg rod. Good setup for smaller'ish fish like trout. The weight difference will be noticeable.
Keep your 4000 reel to match with heavier class rod. In case you'll plan to fish for bigger fish.

Re: Is my reel too big?
Bcf usually have a sale every few months where they have the sienna and sonic combo with braid for 99 bucks.
Buy a new combo pock the heavier rod and the 2500 reel.
Come home and swap reels over and now you have 2 combos you can use one heavy one light.
Alternatively just buy a 2500 sienna for 40 or so bucks for the run out model and be done.

Re: Is my reel too big?
I would buy a 1000 reel, much better for plastics fishing as it allows you to retrieve the lure a lot slower, but you might have to spend a little bit to get a good quality one but it will be worth it

I agree with what has already been said, size 2000-2500 should be perfect.
