I ended up getting a Catana Egi (7 1/2 ft)....dont really like it, it's too stiff and I'm not a fan of split grips (they dont sit in the rod holders/rocket launcher very well) I seem to get a better action out of a jig with my nibble tip whiting rod (it hasnt happened yet, but casting a big jig will snap it one day for sure).
If I could only take out 1 rod for the day, it would be my whiting rod (Shimano Impact NXT)....have caught everything on that little beauty.
Catana egi isn't exactly an egi rod. Yes it would've been too stiff for squid.

I'm using black max s 30 bucks from BCF 7ft n use a stradic on it ....
Just buy 2 of same rod n reel outfits to egi with.
Imo a good land base egi outfit is more important then a top of range boat/ yak rod combo.

Generally find boat squid hell of a lot easier to catch then landbase n shorter bite period lb .
Casting distance n feel n technique a lot more important land base...

if you are just drifting on a boat with the rods in the holder then yeah you dont really need anything special because you are not actively fishing tbh!!bowl wrote: ↑Thu May 28, 2020 9:01 pmGenerally find boat squid hell of a lot easier to catch then landbase n shorter bite period lb .

feel and technique is equally important on a boat if you are actively jigging as it is with landbased squidding.
you cover a lot more ground in a boat than landbased, so chances of capture increases a fair bit, and bite windows are influenced by tides and time of day not whether your landbased or on a boat.

If you've got a pedal yak just let out a rod length of line, hold the tip forward and pedal a little bit. This will swing th squid in next to you to net it easily. I fish an 8'6 egi rod off the yak and have no issuesSeb85 wrote: ↑Thu May 28, 2020 3:18 pmOk thanks.Mattblack wrote: ↑Thu May 28, 2020 2:59 pm

I'm assuming not to pedal too much to give too much slack.

Re: Egi Rod for boat use recomendations
It's just easier to get them from the yak so you don't need to throw piles of money at getting a top of the range egi rod to maximise your much slimmer chance of catching one landbased.
I just use soft plastic rods and generally get squid when I want one, dirty and stirred up water at Portland being the obvious exception and I'm not sure if a $200 rod would've helped me much there.

Re: Egi Rod for boat use recomendations
I'd say biggest pro of a 8'6 Ego rod land based is your cast ability. You can sling jigs and slugs like no tomorrow... essentially covering more ground. Whilst it's also good in a boat, it's not as necessary.
I've got a sephia 8'6 and use it as a whiting and squid rod. I'm still yet to find a stick I like more on the whiting.
