Seeking Westernport Channels Info
Hi all,
I'm Interested in trying Snapper fishing at a couple spots by pedal kayak in Westernport as circled in the attached screenshot and was wondering if anyone has fished those spots or knows the area that can give me some Intel please?
The spot that interests me the most out of the 2 is the top circled area which I believe could be accessed from Lang Lang.
Having never fished In Westernport apart from the Warneet Channel I have the following questions /concerns and was hoping to get some solid advice:
1.Does anyone know if that channel area holds/or has caught Snapper there?
2.Is this spot realistically close enough to the shore to reach by pedal kayak? what would the approx distance be?
3.Is the shaded green area on the map mud? which will be exposed at low tide?
4.how deep approx would the water be over the shaded green area at high tide?
5.In terms of safety on the water, would it be fair to say Westernport tide would be pretty strong here when it's running, therefore i should target fishing there 1-2 hrs before and after high tide ?assuming the channel wouldn't be reachable at low tide via going across the mud, also meaning If i don't head in before low tide I would be stranded?
Or, would It be best if i try to catch Snapper near the circled area next to Jam Jerrup? certainly looks more accessible,
Or can anyone suggest anywhere else in Westernport i should try specifically for Snapper ?
All comments/feedback welcome ! thanks !

Re: Seeking Westernport Channels Info
Never targeted snapper there, but western port has strong current. I've only been on kayak, fished coroner bay. Definitely need high tide, or you'll be stuck.
Coronet bay generally not much current compared to other spots, but stronger the closer to the channel. Especially when windy.
Dont go alone, go with someone experienced, pick the right weather, bring EPIRB etc.
I remember reading news of someone on kayak got drifted too fast too quick too far, then died.
Despite all that, corinet bay is a good starting place for western port. Mix bag there, from snapper to gummy to kgw.

Re: Seeking Westernport Channels Info
Probably your best bet for this info would be at the vyak forum - there is loads of info from well seasoned kayak fishermen, for where to launch from wpb and ppb, how to time the tides, etc. I have fished from grantville a few times for gummy sharks, from here you have to either fish over the high tide (short session) or fish over the low and wait until the tide rises enough to get back to shore due to the mud banks.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I think there's only one way to find out and that would be for me to get there at low tide to understand what the access is like

Re: Seeking Westernport Channels Info
*UPDATE*
I went out today on the yak, I skipped Lang Lang because the tide was low, so 1st stop was to suss out Coronet Bay, didn't like the look of it for Snapper so went to the next Bay at Reef Island which looked the same except for the Island. It was a rising tide (9.30am) when i went out and all i came across was thick weed varieties/kelp etc with the occasional sand hole. I hugged the Island up until the point but couldn't find what i thought would be a good snag less place to cast so maybe i was in the wrong spot or needed to go out further ? (see attached pic of spots i tried) Interestingly when i was at the point the tide was coming up but i was drifting south of WP LOL, hence why I didn't want to venture further out from the point plus i thought it would be more of the same terrain unless I went out about another 400m :O. I casted some quality baits in a few sand holes for cpl hrs,and wasn't getting any bites so i headed In shallower and flicked a squid jig around for nothing. Packed it in and thought don't think i'l be coming back here again , lot of flies, mosquitoes on the shore along with somewhat of an obstacle course to get your kayak over. Deflated i decided to go somewhere else and caught a couple medium squid and battled a COLOSSAL monster squid for 10 mins, but i was no match for it's jets and eventually it broke free , and I lost it because i couldn't get it upto the surface to net it!!!!. On my way home I stopped at Lang Lang to suss that out as it was low tide (below some pics).I reckon i can peddle out to the channel? ,although I'm assuming there's no way to find the channel without a sounder? unless i spend time out there and wait for the tide to recede a bit to expose the channel, but i figure i need to get a sounder sooner or later......I reckon Jam Jerrup might be the way to go on a slack tide to access the deeper channel, so yeah more planning is needed!

Re: Seeking Westernport Channels Info
Hey mates, new to kayak fishing, launched recently in Grampians without luck and realized an anchor is must as the wind flew me away when it was open in the channel in my inflatable HD330 kayak. Planning to launch in WPB, based on this thread and other few I have gone through, the safer to start is around Corinella. Do we have any information around Hastings or Stony point ?

Are you new to kayaking? If yes I wouldnt be fishing around Corinella, lots of dangers around there but rather be trying around Lang Lang as a beginner, and you will find there is more chance of bumping into other kayakers around Lang LangGoneFishinAgain wrote: ↑Thu Nov 21, 2024 10:49 amHey mates, new to kayak fishing, launched recently in Grampians without luck and realized an anchor is must as the wind flew me away when it was open in the channel in my inflatable HD330 kayak. Re: Seeking Westernport Channels Info
Thanks mate, yes I'm new. I will have a buddy along with me. Will start at Lang Lang and see if there is any luck. Thinking to start during low tide and come back during high, to lessen chances to get stuck. Target is anything which hooks as primarily I'd be in learning mode to manage kayak, then fishing. Any tips around how far from the shore is a sweet distance between bites and safety would be appreciated, aside from any beginner tips. Will be keen to put a sounder installed before we launch.
