Soft Roof Racks
Hi guys hope I’m not asking too many dumb questions.
I am planning on upgrading car mid year to a 4wd Ute so dont want to invest to much into my heap of junk Lancer has anybody used soft racks for transporting a 10ft Kayak?
Are they safe or steer clear?

Re: Soft Roof Racks
I've got soft roof racks for my 10ft stand-up paddle board - I drive a a Mitsi ASX so not the biggest of roof coverage but seems to hold up alright for the short trips I've taken it on. Yet to see how they hold up going at speeds 80+km/h

Re: Soft Roof Racks
I'd be a bit careful on the freeway but they're probably ok if you use enough straps - bow, stern and one each around the yak and through the window where the roof racks sit

Re: Soft Roof Racks
I've been using them for years but I don't trust the tie downs they come with so I just bought 2 ratchet straps and I've driven as far as Horsham at 110kph without a problem

Re: Soft Roof Racks
I used to carry a mini mal surfboard with soft roofracks without any problems. Just be sensible on the freeway and consider a stern and bow line for extra support and safety and you should be ok.
The only thing better than serenity is a two stroke at full throttle!

Re: Soft Roof Racks
while there are better ways I have used the soft racks when I first started kayak fishing - that was on a 4.1 meter kayak and they did the job
I use to run a rope tied to the front of the kayak down to the bumper area and didn't worry about the back
I upgraded to a set of second hand roof racks after about 9 months
of cause now days I use a trailer after the first kayak carrier got a fair amount of rust from dropping salt water over it all the time and the kayaks I use now have grown in length

Re: Soft Roof Racks
I used them from time to time but i put a 25mm pvc conduit inside them to give them some rigidity.
seemed to work ok with that
