Port Phillip Bay
Port Phillip Bay
Just wondering how far out people paddle to on their kayaks for an ideal depth? I don't have a sounder so am never sure how far out I should be.
Some good recommendations for locations between Beaumaris and Elwood would be greatly appreciated also
Thanks!

Re: Port Phillip Bay
As far as it takes lol. Could be 50m, could be 5km, it has been 15km on occasion
You can use the Navionics Web App on your phone's internet browser to get a rough idea of how deep you are. The depth is usually accurate within a couple of meters. If you pay for the app on your phone it'll show where you are on the map which is handy, although it obviously costs more than the free web version.

Re: Port Phillip Bay
Depends on the place, but I usually fish in about 7mts of water which around the bayside area is usually 500-1000m from shore, but this is pretty difficult to quantify by eye alone so you need to have some form of navigation.
Good spots between beauy and elwood i'd focus on would be around sandringham anchorage and ricketts point, if you fish ricketts make sure you're aware of the regulations with the marine park.

Re: Port Phillip Bay
I catch good snapper whiting salmon squid and gars along quiet corner area just out from the green markets and marine park
Drops off fairly quick from 5 to 14m and less than a km out

Re: Port Phillip Bay
Stick to the landbased spots that you're familiar with but 50-100m away from the landbased spots. That's how I started my yak fishing without sounder.
When I got the sounder, I got surprised how quickly some water drops from 2-3m to 5-7m.
Usually I fish 4-7m.

Re: Port Phillip Bay
Find out when DougieK is fishing at Mt Martha and anchor up right in front of him.

Lol.
Okay I thought 50-100m is decent away enough from the landbased spots. Maybe 200m+ if DougieK is there.
