Because of Whiskers's accident

Post by Texas » Thu Jul 30, 2020 6:56 pm

WIRES - 1300 094 737
Wombat mange - 0431 600 125

Dead Wildlife
Ist make sure they are dead. I know someone with big scares from a stunned roo
Get them off the road. I've used ropes and the car before
If it's a male, spray a X with fluo paint
If it's a female, check the pouch
If you can't check the pouch, ring WIRES with the location.
Roadkill can be gruesome & not everybody can stomach the result.
If there's a "pinky" in the pouch - call WIRES & they'll talk you through it.
No phone reception - (very basically) Do Not remove the "pinky" from the teat
Cut the teat with scissors/knife & put a safety pin through the teat, so "pinky" doesn't swallow it.
Take to the nearest rescuer
INJURED WILDLIFE
DO NOT give fluids or food, it could kill them
If you are confidentially able to secure the animal, without causing more damage, wrap in a blanket and call WIRES
If you can't do that, tell WIRES the location & they will follow up
HIT & RUN
Notify WIRES of the location of the accident
Adrenaline can enable an injured animal to escape into the bush. They'll die slowly without help
WOMBAT MANGE
If you notice a wombat with mange, notify 0431 600 125
Untreated mange is fatal, but, caught early is 100% curable

I know this has nothing to do with fishing, but, many fishermen go bush & could help
I love our wildlife & I hope you do too

True story from a few years back from a mate who is/was a court reporter.
A gentleman was fronting the court because he had been caught eating road kill. The judge gave him a figurative smack on the wrist and as proceedings were finishing up, in front of a packed room, the judge asked "just as a matter of interest, what does possum taste like?'
Without missing a beat the man replied "Well your honour, it tastes a bit like koala'.
He then turned and left the building to peals of laughter.
