Haha, I was basing it on the fact he only had an ancient laptop. That being said, it would probably run Quake 3 Arena just fine... Also unreal tournament....

Bit late on this one guys but a few things to ponder for those hooking up the NBN

NBN just like every other connection type will be affected by congestion at one point or another. The providers (telstra, optus etc) pay NBNco for bandwidth which is then purchased by customers in accordance with their plan. What this means is that smaller providers buy less bandwidth as they have less customers to use it, and larger providers buy more bandwidth to cope with their larger amount of customers.

Now, the trick is to figure out which provider has the highest amount of bandwidth for the least amount of customers. You'd assume that it'd be a medium-large scale provider who would purchase the bandwidth, yet not large enough to hold the dominant market share in your area.

As somebody who has worked on the NBN rollout for 3 years now, I can tell you that as with most regional centres, telstra holds a massive % of market share. This indicates that most of the customers in the area will sign up to NBN on a Telstra plan, leading to congestion and therefore slow speeds in the area eventually.

My tip would be to sign up with with either Optus or iiNet as they will purchase enough bandwidth to supply you with fast speeds, and not have the huge influx of customers that Telstra would have.

Lastly, when looking at speed packs, count out the 12/1 as its only for people who barely use their Internet for anything but emails.

25/5 - single person/couple, regular browsing & multimedia
50/20 - single/couple with high multimedia usage, family with medium usage
100/40 - nerds, gamers, huge families and porn addicts

Hope this helps!

Don't worry about it...do you think I understood everything! Whilst we are at it...wtf is a 'ping'?
Ping is basically lag and the more ping the more the game lags. I play with 400 ping and its not too bad but anything higher than 500 is unplayable for me. It usually ends up being a half second delay with 500 + ping.
Ping is the time (measured in milliseconds) that your computer takes to send and receive a signal to and from a third party.

When gaming, it refers to how long it takes to send your moves and receive everyone else's from the game server. A 200ms delay means from the time you shoot at somebody, it takes 0.2 seconds for the game to register you shot at them.

With 200ms Ping you'll be so far behind the game that you won't get shot either  might get kicked out though
