Replacing Impeller

Post by davek » Sun Jul 28, 2013 7:13 am

Yesterday I replaced the Impeller in an old Mercury outboard. Although I work on chainsaws and mowers a fair bit, I was a bit hesitant about having a go at it. Turns out it was fairly simple apart from getting the Impeller seated over the key, and it all come together fairly quickly. Guys I suggest you think about doing this yourself before you get the dealers to do it. $30 and 1 1/2 hours of my time was fairly cheap I thought, cheers davo

Any idea Dave how much it would have cost for a dealer to do it?
thanks

It had 3 1/2 fins left, I'm guessing that's shagged  cheers davo
Just had another look, it had 2 full fins, 2 1/2 fins, it's a wonder it was pumping water at all

No idea Jim, but I'm it would be costly considering what they charge for labour, cheers davo

There not all that straight forward Dave, the old Merc's are easy but some of the others ain't, especially the newer models. However, if you get youself a repair manual then that makes it a bit easier.

Some are easy & others not so.
Replacing a water pump impellar usually consists of removing the lower leg to get to the pump.
Some gearshift shafts are an absolute ***** to get undone & some are an absolute doddle.
The other thing is that you need to remember which way the impellar rotates.
Sounds simple, but get it wrong & she won't pump.
By all means have a go at it if you think your mechanical expertise is up to it, but just remember that if something does go wrong a mechanic will probably charge at least 50% more to fix it than he normally might to do the job in the first place - I do ;-)
