Anode on boats

Post by Joker91 » Sun Jul 17, 2022 8:57 pm

So I just found out what anodes are and their purpose on a boat.

For anyone who does not know, they are a metal that you attach to the boat / motor which is more susceptibility to corrosion, so the salt eat away at the anode and leave everything else alone (Please correct me if I am wrong in my explanation).

Currently, my Suzuki motor has an anode on it but I was thinking if I should install another one directly on the aluminium boat (4meter Stacer).

Curious if any one else has installed an anode directly on their aluminium boat and are willing to share photos of how you done it and it’s positioning.

What boats have you seen it on that it was attached to the hull?

On my 2018 Yamaha 4 stroke these are the anodes you can replace
1 for each cylinder water jacket 3 off-These only lasted 250hrs before replacing
1 at the rear plate that fixes near the transom
1 on the lower leg
1 at the rear of the lower leg bolted near the cav plate under the water
1 as the adjustable cavitation plate fin
Nil fitted to the alloy hull
Im happy to see the anodes deteriorate as this shows me they are working

You will find them on commercial and large recreational vessels that spend most of their time in the water. If you were going to attach them to your Hull, you need to make sure they are the correct type for your Hull. So ask an expert. A boat builder should know.
There's nothing . . . absolutely nothing . . . half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.

Use a 6 sided socket as I broke 2 12 sided ones. Its tough to get out
There is a shaft that has a Zinc ring -Thats what corrodes .They are only aboy $2 each

Naughty naughty . Someone wasn't paying attention in science class.

All outboards I have seen have one under the cavitation plate area.
Whatever you do please do not smear grease or worse, paint the anode to match the engine or boat colour. Ive seen this done before...

i wouldn't bother with putting an anode on the hull.
give it a wash down, hose out after use, should last a long time.
generally you don't want any metal touching your alloy hull if you can avoid it as you will get corrosion of the alloy from any dissimilar metals.
