4hp Johnson issues??

Post by jfel » Sun May 30, 2021 3:45 pm

Hi all. I’ve just fired up an old (1978) Johnson 4hp after 15 years. Starts immediately and runs well...EXCEPT, the throttle won’t hold. When I pull on the lever to rev it up it just slips back to ‘stop’ until it cuts out. The only way I can keep it running it to physically hold the throttle in place. Any ideas on where to start?

Check "Idle control screw" on Carburetor - Adjust 1/4 turn to increase Idle - Also check if there is a throttle lever "Stop adjustment screw".

Go to Utube and search for "JOHNSON 4 HP ( FIXED )" - Very interesting video regarding Idle/ Throttle control as well as Choke function.
