Repco rear seals

Post by sandef » Sun Feb 23, 2025 10:31 pm

Went to Repco looking for new rear wheel bearing seals, noticed the Holden ones had a washer or shim that sit at the back . Does anyone know what is for, never seen it on other brands of marine seals

From my experience the repco / supercheap bearing kits are pretty average. I don't have a boat trailer but I have a tradie trailer and can highly recommend the Timken bearing kits, they are excellent quality and never had any issues.

not sure what the shim is for.
But!!
the Seals that come with the timken had only a double layer/rib, whereas the ALKO that was already on my hub had a triple layer/rib seal, so i went backwards lol.
alko do make some good stuff but not cheap, dont skimp on these things imo.

The seal sits stationary on the axle
The sealing ring taps into the hub which fits over the seal and seals on 2 or 3 points
Also when installing the seal onto axle use marine silicon on the inside and also under the stainless sealing ring against the hub
I've used these for 40 years and never had an issue
Also I service them every 12 months
Also use the silicon when tapping on the hub grease cap if that's what is on the outside

The shim is the sealing which the seal contacts to keep the water and diry out
