Yamaha outboard left outside advice

Post by potatoeater » Sun Jun 19, 2022 7:56 pm

Hi all,

I came across a boat while up in Sydney that had my heart racing. It's a haines hunter v17l in great condition.

The issue is that it's been left outside in the rain for the last year without a cover over the engine. It's developed some weird rust? stains at the trim pole that has me concerned.

I'm hoping someone who's seen this can tell me if this is a serious or not so serious issue. My plan is to hire a marine specialist to inspect the boat, but due to the cost and time to schedule, I'm hoping I can get an idea if this rusting and leaving outside is a dealbreaker before I even get an inspection.

If anyone has one of these- yamaha 4 stroke 60hp, is it an issue to be left outside in the elements without a cover for over a year?

Thanks

Ive had a boat motor many years ago with rust in same place just rubbed it back painted it with Yamaha grey spray pack colour no problems
If it works dont panic it ill be ok
If its rusted thru the housing u up for a bit of dosh there
As long as the Stainless Steel ram isnt pitted-as that will chew out the seal and leak

60Hp on a V17l is way underpowered.

V17l needs an minimum of 115Hp and really a 135, 140Hp or 150Hp.

So make sure you factor this into the price.

As for the rust it looks strange probably a manufacturing defect it might be covered under warranty.

If the transom, floor and stringers havent been done then that little bit of surface rust is going to be the least of your worries

It's the trim motor cover like said and I've seen plenty of motors of all brands with it rusted. It would have been a dodgy paint job from factory that allowed the rust to begin.

But FP is right, 60hp on a v17 is WAY underpowered. Even a 90hp is unders.
