Fish finder power plug compatibility.

Post by jfel » Thu Jul 09, 2020 5:53 pm

I’m looking to get a new fish finder. I currently have an older simrad with a 4 pin round power plug. If possible I’m wanting to get something new with the same plug so I don’t have to rewire it. I went to a store today to check it out but the guy was BCFin hopeless.

Simrad make some really good Finders, just very pricey generally

Plenty Commercial Fishos out there running Simrad's plus some charters.

Regarding the 4 Pin Plug, you may struggle, unless you can match it up to another brand but the locating groove may differ too.
You may have to make up your own adapter or see if Simrad makes a power cord extender you can chop up and wire into the new units plug.

Hey Pal,

FishnMiss covered it well. It may just be that the Simrad your using is an older model with less bells and whistles. Might be less accurate. My mate’s got one and the GPS had us located on the outskirts of Namibia! Go figure!

Whatever ya do though, replace anything that looks a bit dodgey. Don’t wanna get caught out.

Cheers 👍🏾

The newer sounder technology is generally miles ahead of the older stuff. i highly doubt your old transducer will be compatible with the newer units, all depends on what model you get ofcourse.
my 2c. rip it out and use the new one that comes with the new unit

Just to clarify - I’m just wanting to use the existing power cable. Happy to replace the transducer and cable.

you will find that if you follow this plug back a few meters or less that it will be joined to normal power wiring from your busbar or battery, so just cut it off there and rejoin the new one that you have, usually just red and black wires :tu:

Go to ch Smith they have great displays and have a good idea on how each unit works. Simrad is made by the same people who make lowrance.
My mate has the latest simrad ns series on his boat with airmar tx it’s pretty good. My only advice when you buy a new unit and connect the wires even if it’s in the cabin use waterproof connectors and heat shrink tubing over the connector it will be trouble free for years.
