The boat and where you are going to FUSH -You only need a unit that tells you-GPS Data and Depth -All the other stuff is Crap-Same as Braid and Coloured Lures
Ive got the GARMIN 551s -A Cheapo but it helps me catch the FUSH
That's right keep it basic

I've been out of the game for a while so I'm starting from scratch, I don't know what I want hence the research, I fish shallow for my target fish, squid, whiting, flathead, salmon, trevally, all bread and butter fish. I assume I need a wide angle unit ?

if you drift or anchor a lot then forget sidescan and downscan.
hopefully that will narrow down your choices.

I only drift for flatties and sometimes squid but all other times I'm anchored... I'm talking past tense when I did use a boat.

well let me rephrase my last comment then.

firstly flathead and squid, both will not show up on sounder. squid is a maybe at this stage.

if you drift or anchor while using sidescan, all you will get is long lines drawn across the screen, the boat has to be moving for sidescan/downscan to work properly.
traditional sonar will work perfectly. its because of the way the cone angles are projected.
so if your going to stay still/ move sideways(drift) sway around and come across those kinds of fishing then side scan will be absolutely useless to you. downscan will work if the boat is anchored, but might as well use traditional sonar at that stage.

if you will be sounding around trying to find structure or fish then traditional sonar and structure scan (side&down scan) will be beneficial.

heres a post i did a while ago about using sidescan
viewtopic.php?f=70&t=21920&hilit=sidescan

for the above to work, boat needs to be moving!!!

most units these days already have them anyway, so if the price difference between having it and not having it is peanuts, then id always get one which already has side and downscan.

Just d9wn scan for those fish.
Flatjean won't show up so.just need a d9wn scan to show a sandy or reef bottom.
Unless your chasing salmon and flicking lures down scan.
I don't think squid show up so on sonar,

From the 1st video it looks like this new technology will pick up everything.....if you can see the fishes tail, you must be able to see species without swim/air bladders (be pretty exciting to see big toothies swimming under the boat)
