Sliding baits into channels (with warmies report)

Post by Leonard » Thu Jan 07, 2021 1:02 pm

Hi all,

I went out to the warmies to try sliding some live mullet into the channel in the Yarra last night using those little sliders that are purportedly popular in South African surf fishing. Not sure if it was snags, current, or my leader was too long, but all I managed was tangles. Has anyone else had success with these? At this point I just want to get the bait down to the sinker and I can worry about catching something later. I wonder if the current twisted everything up.

Seems like it was quiet for most people despite the high tide coinciding with sunset. One guy caught a tre alley and a whiting on clams.

Cheers,
Leo

Hey Bong,

Try shorter leader like 50cm. I had the same problem before. Keep trying, the jewies are there. Good luck...

Years ago I did some time hunting for mulloway with live mullet. All I did was a paternoster with 1m leader fixed.
Warmies is snaggy, so there's always a chance of getting snagged.
Never tried sliding thing.

I spend quite a bit of time sliding baits. Getting snagged is going to be a part of it. Make sure the sinker to ring connection is SIGNIFICANTLY lighter than your mainline and it will help a a lot. You'll lose your sinker but not your ring / slide / hook setup.

Can make a little video on different slider rigs if you wnat me too.

Please make a video Dougie, I'd like to see how it works and whats the benefit of it compared to other rigs.

The warmies is a very snaggy place made try using a float or balloon to get your live bait out with the right wind etc
