Getting out for a fling

Post by JS270 » Thu Nov 05, 2020 7:24 pm

Finally the restrictions in Melbourne were eased enough to allow me to have a fish and despite the South westerly wind pushing up the bay adding a decided chill from the rain I decided it was a good opportunity to head down and try and get a fish for dinner. The plan was simple enough with a rising tide peaking at around 6 and sunset coming at around 8.00 I headed down to my usual spot to try and snag a few Pinkies.

Rid was the usual pulley rid but due to the strong winds I had to use the heavier 6 oz leads to get the baits out to the drop off. At first I was using the keeled leads that lift up of the bottom quicker on the retrieve but with the strong side drip and smooth flat shape of these leads it quickly became evident that I would have to go back to the the breakaway style grip leads , also in 6 oz. Rods were a combination of my Century Fireblade mated up with my Penn Mag3 525 and my Graphex LDSM mated to my Penn Mag 2 515 .

It was good with the wind pushed waves breaking on the outer reef area and clearly showing the drop into the slightly deeper water showing where I needed to land the baits. I should note that this isn't a deep water area and is prone to sand movement which changes the position of the gutter. Presenting the baits along the edge of the drop of has provided me with the most consistent results.

Drop off to the right of the break

Baits were simple enough being half Pilchards split with a foam insert to make them float off the bottom presenting better for the fish . The session started well just befor the top of the tide with a number of bites from the Pinkies that I was hoping to catch and thankfully there was a few that were bigger than the bait stealers from the last time I was out.

Nice Pan sized fish destined for dinner

Whilst I was hopeful of getting a few the falling barometer told me that I would need a bit of lady luck to get a good catch , sadly that proved not to be the cast with the fish going off the bite as the tide peaked. Thankfully my plan was just to fish till dark as the forecast was for the rain to get heavier and with no sun decidedly colder . Still just being out on the water has its rewards after being cooped up due to lockdown. With that I pulled the pin and headed home eager to have some fresh fish finally after too long getting fish from the shops . Cooked whole with a chilly glaze it topped off a relaxing day .

Looking forward to getting out again to get a few more soon :D

Top effort. Good report. Thanks for sharing.
Would you please explain how you split the half pilchard and insert foam
for bait presentation.

Wow! Great fish, great report and absolutely perfect size for the table. I find the 2kg+ models to be a bit tasteless and dry, but that's just me. I didnt know the barometer had an impact on the snapper so that's good to info for future trips.

Here's a photo of the Pilchard tail with foam inserted and ready to be baited from this afternoons session.

I’m not sure if it’s line or elasticated bait thread, if it is fishing line, I think bait thread would definitely be a better alternative.
