Bait fishing I assume?
Rod reel wise, get at least a 10ft. Up to 14ft if you want. 4000 reel with 15lb to 20lb line or go crazy for the big stuff with 6000 and 30lb line. Depends what you're targeting.

The technique and where to fish etc, go check you tube videos as seniorfisho mentioned plenty of good videos explaining surf fishing. Easier to learn by watching videos.

For bait fishing I wouldn't bother with a rod less than 12ft, it will give you that little extra casting distance as well as keep your line higher out of the wash.

You also need a sand spike / rod holder one that will keep your rod nice and high.

Get yourself a good pair of waders not the Kmart cheapie because you will be sorry the cheap ones are just uncomfortable.

And finally like others have said research surf fishing and see what line / rigs / tackle will suit the area your fishing I personally only use mono for surf fishing usually 20pd with a 40pd leader for that bit more abbrasion resistance and occasionally you might get lucky and catch something bigger.

The most important thing is learn how to read a beach, learn to identify gutters and deeper areas as these conditions change daily and it's what will put you in with a good chance.

Good luck, let us know how you go.
