I'll be doing mostly spinning for salmon and bit of light bait work. I already have a Daiwa sea jigger SJ 325M rod that i picked up cheap.

Not really. I'm using a quantam Cabo for my salmon, a luvias on my XL. a penn clash for kings, two lethal 100's to soak baits with and a penn overhead on my LBG gear. The only shimano i'm currently using is a stradic FJ 2500 on my SP/squidding outfit.

Have long read of this website http://www.alanhawk.com/ and consider the information he presents. If I was buying a top end super spinner, it would be a Saltiga, but i don't think in that price range you can go passed the 5000-6000 Spheros/Gosa/Strad/Bio depending on exactly what you wanted.

Hi

Is this outfit for throwing lures at salmon mostly?

If so, i think a daiwa 3000 or shimano 4000 is already plenty of reel.

Same bro been a Daiwa man ever since I started fishing still have my first Daiwa reel a 160RL dad bought me for $20 back in 1986.I also love how some Tackle Shops try to steer me into buying Shimano gear and then I get a blank look when I say I only buy Daiwa then they give me that whole Shimano spiel about it being more popular and better value than Daiwa, not in my mind that's for sure. :-D
Hey Marty or sinsemilla you guys seem to know a lot about daiwa have you seen one of these before I've had it for years, thought I'd hold on to it since it's really old and it might be worth something one day to a antique fishing gear collector haha
Wow that's a classic that would be a late 60's early 70's I've seen similar reels with the Ra not Rd at the end of the serial number go for between $30 to $60 in good condition. I keep my 160RL just for sentimental reasons, which reminds me to dig it out from Mum and Dads place when I'm next down there.
Awesome Marty thanks for the info mate,I will definitely hold on to it!

x2 daiwas reels don't seem to be that good until you start spending a bit more
Have you given the luvias a good run yet?

I have had a few okuma reels and don't rate them, but I have had the v system 80 used for surf fishing for the last 5 years and it's one of the best reels iv owned.
Just had it serviced and no issues just needed grease and clean, maybe the smaller size could suit not sure about the weight but?
Defently worth a look.

What actually happened was a forum member leant me an extra XL combo so I can take the greek goddess estuary fishing without one of us having to use a 3-6kg with 12lb braid that doesn't really cast suitably sized lures.
