I have eaten quite a few ellies but every now and then you get one that is pretty bad and I don't know why - I don't tent to take them these days after getting a couple that were pretty rank
I'm not that keen on Salmon myself and prefurit as bait but it does pickle well
I like to test all my fish shallow fried with just salt and pepper, if they taste good then I will eat the odd one. Australian salmon is also another one that everyone seems to hate. If that's you then I bet you haven't tried salmon sashimi/ceviche. Cut into cubes and soak it in lemon juice for 5-10mins, served with tomato, red onion, olive oil, black pepper and lightly salted. Yum...right up there with any other white fish. It does need to be bled when caught and eaten fresh though.

I once ate a carp out of the Upper Coliban and discovered it wasn't anywhere near as bad as I expected it to be. Not the best texture but tastes like a regular fish otherwise imo.
