Fish ID from Sandringham
Hooked this little guy on a soft plastic.
Is it some kind of mud-skipper? He was actually quite colourful!

Re: Fish ID from Sandringham
They do look a lot like mudskippers but Im pretty sure they have a 'proper' name! Ive caught gazillions of these on bait, never lure!!! Looks like you got yourself a biggun(for that species)!! Ive caught them at docklands, warmies, station pier and mornington pier that I can remember. How big was it?
When I got time,
I wet a line cos Im a junkie,
been fishin since a kid,
I like it cos it numbs me..

The SP worm is about 11cm so I'm guessing the fish was about 15cm. Yeah I was actually suprised by the size of him...thought I had a Flatty by the small headshakes!

Im willing to bet that its not a gurnard! Im guessing its genetic heritage would be closer to a blenny. I think you might have caught the grand daddy of this species!! I reckon the biggest Ive caught is not much over 10cm!

Re: Fish ID from Sandringham
I don't think it's a gurnard... here's another angle.
It doesnt have the horns above the eyes like a Blenny:
