Fishmonger practices and fish ID?
I actually don't usually buy fish from a Fishmonger as I catch my own fish to eat.
Walking past my local seafood shop today I noticed these in the window for sale.
I also took this photo 2 months ago: I know what a Silver Trevally looks like so is this store deliberately mislabelling their fish?
Interesting to note their "local squid" is always arrow squid. I fish locally and 99.9% of the squid are Southern Calamari!
Your average customer would probably not know the difference between species!
Are their customers being taken for a ride?

Re: Fishmonger practices and fish ID?
I would have thought a warehou is a warehou is a warehou?
Seems like a confusing mislabelling that inhibits the consumer's ability to make an informed purchasing choice.

It's common. There are, it seems, no standards between retailers: especially when you move away from big sellers like salmon.

You can catch arrow squid in PPB. Saw one caught last time @ Blairegowrie, when I was squiding with Vinhii..

Yeah labelling is an issue, sometimes they have the warehou in brackets depends on the fish monger or market....
arrow squid are more prevalent offshore, probably where the commercial netters fish......

http://www.dpiw.tas.gov.au/inter,nsf/We ... Y98ZQ?open" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; <- it's a tassie link, but it shows the common known names.
As for the squid, it depends on what area they consider local. Is local, PPB or WPB or maybe Bass Straight, all can be considered local waters.
