ID on something i caught last night
Caught this guy last night from a Kayak out in the wooden pilons at the end of Princes Pier. It was about 35-40cm long and put up an epic fight for the size - i genuinely thought it was a good size snapper it pulled so hard.
I asked around to a few other folks in boats and nobody had any idea, so i photographed it and chucked it back.
A bit of googling this morning didnt show up anything conclusive but the closest thing i could find was a Black-Banded Kingfish:

Thoughts?

It does indeed look like Seriolina nigrofasciata - Black banded trevally or Blackbanded amberjack
Congratulations, rare catch.
Sounds like it went hard, like all the Seriolina/ Seriola's do

Just had a look at the Vic Rec Fishing guide and I reckon it’s a Warehou

Geelong warfs have schools of them holding up around the pylons at times through the year.Nude up wrote:Blue warehou or snotty trevally

I tried to work it out last night using the "My Fishing Mate" app and the closest match i could find was the Warehou (as some have said), and i showed the mrs asking her if she thought the 2 fish were the same in the photos and she said close but not quite, which was also my feeling.Bayrock wrote:It does indeed look like Seriolina nigrofasciata - Black banded trevally or Blackbanded amberjack

Then a fresh google search this morning showed up the Kingy which is the closest thing i could match it to.
And yes this thing pulled real hard - was peeling a lot of drag and i had to lock up before it took me into the pylons with no chance to get it out.

Quote from earlier link:
"Being soft fleshed and having soft mouths, small hooks are required and drag sets should be minimal, but they can also go like freight trains when hooked."
