Wpb by boat

I have a friend that has a boat that wants to get into fishing and he wants to fish out of Hastings this means we would launch from there. Does anyone here have any general advice for fishing wpb by boat and even potential marks they don’t mind sharing because I have never really fished much in a boat I mainly fish landbased and don’t really know much about fishing boat based other then rigs.

Chasing what and from what boat? You can work the Hastings channel itself for flathead and whiting. Even if it's blowing 30 knots provided it's a low tide the banks are high enough to give plenty of wind cover. Otherwise head out the channel and find a nice bit of ground near the shipping channel not even 2 minutes from the end of the Hastings channel for gummies and snapper. Head a slight bit further east to the middle spit for more whiting. Make a hard starboard turn at the end of Hastings channel and work the bank in front of Sandstone Island down to the old BP jetty for squid and whiting.

Basically, unless you want Kingfish and Tuna (aside from those few times they show up further in the port) you can get away with chasing a fisherman's basket on $15 of fuel launching from Hastings in any boat.

Oh and until you know them well, don't try and take shortcuts over the banks. Some areas are only covered by 0.6m of water at high tide with an average depth of only 1.2m.

If he is new to boating I'd be learning the ropes in PPB first. WPB is a whole different beast that needs respecting

He knows how to drive it and how to anchor it he just doesn’t know how to fish wpb properly he gets a couple here and there just very inconsistent because he doesn’t really know any great spots

Best advice I could give you, is to go out a couple of times with someone experienced fishing Westernport.
It's not about whether you can drive a boat, it's the conditions your going into..
